Faith and Courage in a Time of Trouble
Faith and Courage in a Time of Trouble
by France J. Pruitt & Judy Priven
This book tells the story of a nominally Jewish Belgian family who spent more than four years during the Second World War as refugees in the south of France. The narrator was five years old when the family left Brussels and ten when they returned. At first, the family lived openly in a rented farm, supporting themselves as farmers. But they eventually had to go into hiding and were sheltered by families in the region who risked their lives by doing so. In June of 2005, several members of the family returned to the region to dedicate a granite bench in honor of the courageous efforts of its people. Georges Son
George's Son
by John William Locke
George Locke was born in London on New Year's Day 1898 to Henry and Susan Locke. He was named after his paternal grandfather, who apparently emigrated to England from Ireland in the early 1800s. George died in Toronto on January 15, 1993, at the age of 95. During his long life he was, among other things, a school teacher, a superintendent of education, a soldier, a stockbroker, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather and a writer. George wrote many things, but this book concerns itself only with his unpublished autobiographical writing. The story that unfolds within these pages is one man's account of a life that spanned virtually the entire 20th century. It is a personal history of the middle class in Canada during one of the most tumultuous centuries in human history. It is also the story of a man who never let go of his sense of wonder about the world around him. In the end, it is the story of an ordinary man who lived an extraordinary life.

Growing up in The Netherlands
Growing up in The Netherlands
by Jan V. Sengers
World War II invaded the lives of a generation of children in the Netherlands. This memoir tells the story of a middle-class family in the 1930s and 1940s, particularly during the period of the German occupation from 1940 to 1945. The story focuses on the experiences of an eleven-year-old boy at the beginning of the war and how he and his family survived the occupation. As Allied forces landed in Normandy and liberated France and Belgium, the Northern Netherlands entered the most difficult period of the occupation, known as the Hunger Winter. Transportation came to a complete halt, fuel for heating disappeared, and severe food shortages led to widespread malnutrition. The book recalls how an affluent, educated family dealt with life in wartime and under foreign occupation, as well as the gradual return to normalcy after the war. The memoir is set in Rotterdam before the bombing and in the smaller cities of Woerden and Gouda. The story follows the family's move from their comfortable life in the destroyed city of Rotterdam to the safer, small city environment where strong community bonds helped them survive some of the darkest years of the 20th century.
